How to Help Houston (and other areas hit by Harvey)

There’s much in the news these days that can be avoided. Inexcusable acts of terror, hatred, bigotry and ignorance that should make us all ashamed. We can do better, be better. Simply staying silent, in quiet contempt is not enough. Turning off the news, passing by the papers, scrolling through saturation… we are responsible. But what happens when we’re not? When it’s unavoidable? We still must act. We’re once again called on to help our community in crisis.

The devastation from Hurricane Harvey is unfortunately not new. Over the years, we’ve witnessed Katrina and Sandy serve up similar destruction and we know from those disasters that these types of things take years to recover from, if ever. So while it may seem like a trendy thing to talk about, everyone offering up a blanket and benign “my thoughts and prayers”, “text to donate”, etc., the truth is, there can’t be enough outreach. It’s a bandwagon I’ll happily hop on if it means one more person helps. Below, some of my favorite ways to support those suffering in Texas and beyond…
